On 18 March 2015 I was one of the speakers at the seminar „Big Data – Investigative research and data journalism“ of the association Verein für Medieninformation und Mediendokumentation e.V. (vfm), holding a lecture on internet research tools and computer-assisted reporting. In my presentation, I introduced the participants – mainly employees from public broadcasting corporations – into select online databases and explained the basics of computer-assisted reporting. Demonstrations included the evaluation and visualization of data with the help of the web application Google Fusion Tables using a dataset with sponsoring activities of the German Foreign Office, and an analysis of the jury members for German journalist awards. Speakers of the three-day seminar included data journalist Mirko Lorenz, Deutsche Welle, and Wigbert Löer, member of the Stern investigative department. vfm was founded in 1997 as the association of continuous training for media archivists and documentalists and caters for the training needs of these professions.
